The aim of the studies:

To learn how to operate scanning tunneling microscope at molecular resolution. Students acquaints with the scanning tunneling microscope and its modes of operation in order to obtain atomic resolution at the surface of graphite and analyze the atomic structure of the graphite lattice.

The purpose of the work:

Introduce students to the fascinating phenomenon of nanophase separation in homogeneous polymer films of styrene-butadiene-styrene. Determination of the mechanical stiffness of nanophases using atomic force microscopy. Calculation of the length of the polymer chain.

During the laboratory work, students receive an image of the polymer film, determine the percentage of styrene and butadiene, estimate the value of Young's modulus of styrene and butadiene regions.

The aim of the studies:

Observation of bacterial cells morphology.

During the studies students obtain three dimensional images of bacterial cells, perform quantitative analysys of the images of bacterial cell, define characteristic dimension, corugation, etc.

The students learn the ways to process experimental data, obtained using atomic-force and scanning tunneling microscopes: how to treat three dimensional images of bacterial cells, define the characteristic size, roughness, etc..
